New Orleans, LA (Vocus) April 15, 2010

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and EFCO Corporation announced today that NFRC has issued the first Label Certificate under the new Component Modeling Approach (CMA) program to the Monett, Mo.-based commercial window and door company.

EFCO, a Pella Company, pulled the first certificate in March for 5600 2¼ Curtain Wall supplied to the Life Sciences Research Center under construction by the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR). The building, on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, will serve as an industry “magnet” designed to draw all-star research teams. EFCO’s sales rep is ASC, Inc. and its customer is LCG Facades.

“We’ve been working on the CMA program for several years, and after all the hard work and contentious debate it’s very satisfying to have the first ratings in the field,” said NFRC CEO Jim Benney at the organization’s Spring Membership Meeting.

“Because it’s designed to inspire and promote innovation, the new building in Utah was the perfect project to inaugurate NFRC’s new CMA program,” said Joseph Holmes, EFCO’s ACE. ”Even though we were the first and there are some small bugs yet to work out, the process went as smooth as possible.”

EFCO served as the Manufacturer Approved Calculation Entity (ACE) Organization. Manufacturer ACEs employ individuals who are trained and certified by NFRC, which allows manufacturers to serve their own needs more efficiently than contracting with an outside organization. Keystone Certifications, Inc. provided Inspection Agency services.

The Component Modeling Approach (CMA) Product Certification Program, which NFRC launched in January, enables whole-product energy performance ratings for commercial fenestration projects using data from the three primary components of fenestration: frames, spacers, and glazing. The CMA calculates the energy performance ratings according to NFRC 100 and 200, which are required by Utah’s state energy code (IECC 2006).

In addition to providing a new way to generate certified performance ratings for fenestration products in commercial applications, architects, specifiers, and others can download the CMA Software Tool (CMA) and generate non-certified ratings in order to model different fenestration choices.

“CMA is a powerful tool that everyone involved in creating the built environment can use to make their jobs a little easier and simpler,” Benney said. “We expect many companies to follow EFCO’s lead and realize the benefits of the new approach in the months and years to come.”

Interested parties can learn more about CMA on the NFRC Web site at http://www.nfrc.org .

About NFRC

NFRC is a non-profit organization that administers a voluntary, uniform rating, labeling, and certification system for the energy performance of windows, doors, curtain walls, skylights, and other fenestration products. Its members include manufacturers, suppliers, utilities, consumer groups, representatives from the building and code industries, scientific and educational organizations, and government agencies.

(PRWEB) September 23, 2009

Thames Valley police spends over £2.5m a year on energy and utility services. With the continuing volatility of energy prices and the increased regulatory requirements, taking steps to control and reduce energy consumption is a key priority for the force – and it will save thousands of pounds each year.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) started looking seriously at energy reduction in 2005 after realising that energy issues were set to become a greater concern, particularly as they are a public-building operator.

The force already had a large amount of data detailing their energy usage patterns but needed help to make use of it. Energy Manager Neil Wickham explained: “We had masses of data but no means of making sense of it or using it to show how and where we could reduce consumption. We were also unable to determine whether our levels of consumption meant we had to start complying with new legislation.”

TVP brought in carbon and energy specialist IMServ to help transform these figures into useful and meaningful information from which the organisation could benefit, and upon which force managers could base future energy-policy decisions.

Matt Davis of IMServ states that this is a common situation. “Many organisations spend a lot of money in order to obtain potentially powerful data but don’t do anything with it.

“By applying some simple analysis to this data, businesses can develop a much greater understanding of their energy consumption, work out ways to reduce their carbon emissions and, ultimately make significant savings.”

One of TVP’s main objectives is to reduce overall energy consumption while improving its carbon footprint and lowering consumption for all buildings.

Neil Wickham commented: “Even a small unit such as a public-service office will have a minimum energy consumption level throughout the day and night. Lowering this minimum energy consumption and spend across the force can lead to huge annual savings.”

The Challenge

The first challenge was to set about gaining a sound understanding of the Thames Valley Police property portfolio, which ranges from small residential properties and hill-top radio masts right through to Milton Keynes Police Station, one of the largest police stations in Europe.

In total, the force is responsible for the maintenance and management of over 300 buildings throughout the three counties@ Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Neil, who lead the project at TVP, explained: “We have small sites that local police officers use. When they are called out on an emergency, turning the lights off or adjusting the heating are not priorities. We needed an energy consultancy that that was intelligent enough to understand how our individual operations work and be able to develop bespoke and targeted solutions to the energy problems we faced as an organisation.”

The Activity

The energy consultancy were initially brought on board to help provide energy-data collection services but this activity quickly expanded as TVP was made aware of the huge potential that existed with this data.

“As energy manager, I need to understand how and when energy is being consumed in each building in order to develop a strategy to help reduce it,” said Neil.

The consultancy bases its advice on accurate real-time information provided through the use of innovative smart meters. These systems are being installed at TVP sites to generate half-hourly energy consumption readings for electricity, gas and water.

By using its Energy Data-Vision software, the force can now view its energy consumption information through graphs showing profile data, tables detailing registered reads or, at a more sophisticated level, by bench-marking and monitoring sites.

Following the successful trial of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology and Energy Data Vision (EDV) system at nine sites in the Milton Keynes Basic Command Unit area, Thames Valley police is now considering a full rollout of the system across all of the force’s 150 sites.

This would initially be implemented across all of the remaining non-half-hourly electricity sites followed by all gas and water serviced sites over the next two years.

Results

One outcome of the installation of AMR systems and EDV has been the ability to monitor improvements carried out at Milton Keynes Police Station. In 2007/08, passive infra-red movement sensors were installed on the lighting in all communal areas throughout the building.

The predicted consumption savings were in the region of eight to 10%. Using EDV’s Annual Profit reporting function, TVP has been able to demonstrate a reduction of 9.07% – the equivalent to £5,500 per year simply through this single trial.

The consultancy is also looking to install two small-scale building-management systems at two TVP sites to control boiler systems, lighting and air-conditioning units. This mini building-management system will allow the force to remotely set and maintain energy management.

TVP is now able to view a league table of its sites and plot those that are making the most energy savings and those where consumption is highest and energy-efficiency investment appears to be most needed.

The energy management consultancy also worked closely with the force to ensure sites complied with new and existing legislation relating to carbon and energy. IMServ provided assistance in obtaining energy certificate provision including Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs).

Six months after DECs were made a legal requirement for public buildings, there is growing evidence that many businesses are failing to take the new energy legislation seriously.

Matt Davis of IMServ said: “Thames Valley police is a classic example of a public-building operator that needs to comply with DEC legislation. Six months after DEC became law, in October 2008 only 22,976 out of 50,000 had been submitted, representing a shortfall of almost 55%.

“It’s great to see large organisations like the Thames Valley Police recognising the financial importance of saving energy – rather than viewing it as a headache.”

The Future

Now Thames Valley Police is looking for the consultancy to help guide it through the process of obtaining its Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) accreditation. This is a mandatory scheme which will cover large businesses and public organisations, promoting energy efficiency and helping reduce carbon emissions.

The scheme has been designed to generate a shift in awareness in large organisations, especially at senior level and to drive changes in behaviour and infrastructure.

Emissions trading schemes such as CRC provide a financial incentive to reduce emissions by placing a price on carbon emissions.

In the case of CRC, participants have to purchase allowances equivalent to their emissions each year. The overall emissions reduction target is achieved by means of a cap on the total number of allowances available to the group of participants.

However, within that overall limit, individual participants can determine the most cost-effective means to reduce their emissions. Overall, the scheme aims to achieve emissions reductions of at least four megatonnes CO2 per year by 2020.

Matt Davies concluded: “What’s great to see is that, unlike a lot of organisations, Thames Valley Police is embracing the new energy legislation that is being introduced rather than burying their head in the sand. They recognise the sound financial and environmental benefits that this affords, whereas a lot of businesses see stick and no carrot.”

Neil Wickham commented: “I value having an independent expert on hand. Carbon and energy have become a significant business issue for us, and my role is increasingly demanding as the legislative landscape becomes more and more complicated. I expect that IMServ will be a key part of the ongoing development of the energy management systems structure at Thames Valley Police.”

Ronceverte, WV (PRWEB) May 12, 2010

The Ux Consulting group’s report “Nuclear Energy Prospects in Three Middle East Countries” highlighted the MENA region as being one of the most rapidly emerging markets for nuclear construction, and with the regions limited experience in the nuclear industry billions of US dollars are available to tender for.

Based on the ambitious deadlines set and wealth located in the Middle East and North Africa, few regions come close to the rapid pace that MENA will be constructing their first fleets of nuclear power plants.

This huge opportunity for global contractors is however complex and unpredictable. With the exception of Paolo Verde in Arizona, USA, there is little global experience of nuclear construction in desert conditions. As such, any given project can be disrupted by a series of factors including site-specific conditions, acidity in the sand, cooling requirements and varying market rates.

As a result we are seeing new, construction friendly regulations being introduced and a more proactive approach to nuclear construction. These benefits have meant that innovative approaches, new technologies and open competition between construction agencies is growing making the MENA region the next key area for large, small, regional and global contractors alike.

This trend is expected to accelerate in the future as more MENA countries scale up to produce nuclear power. The MENA market is forecast to be worth about US$ 30 billion over the next 10 years. The question utilities must ask themselves is do we have a strategy in place that can deal with this rate of construction?

If not, they could find that they fall foul of the strict time frames that have been introduced in conjunction with a competitive contractor/supplier market.

     Site Selection
Infrastructure Requirements
Transportation Links
Selecting Appropriate EPC Contractors • Effective Use of the Indigenous Workforce
Access to Engineering Expertise
Ensuring Accident & Indecent Free Projects
Delivering Workforce Training

Nuclear construction in this region is costly, technically challenging and potentially hazardous to the environment. If the deadlines are to be met then careful planning is required and construction strategies must be put in place. In order to do that some of the following challenges must be faced:

The MENA Nuclear Construction Conference deals with these issues and more. This exclusive meeting can supply your business with the critical intelligence and tools you need to build a cost effective, time efficient nuclear construction projects. With the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, Arab Atomic Energy Agency, Entergy, Westinghouse, Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, Huron Consulting and many others set to share their nuclear construction experience.
Marco Island, Fla. (PRWEB) November 11, 2007

Distributors representing the Charlotte-based Distribution America and Denver-based PRO Group, Inc. gathered with manufacturers November 7-9 at the Executive Planning Conference (EPC) for nearly 3,500 separate one-on-one meetings.

New products and promotional programs were common themes at the joint event at the Marco Island Marriott in Marco Island, Fla., which drew approximately 500 home improvement industry executives. Thirty-two independent distributor companies were represented at the event, along with 150 key manufacturers.

Roger Hackman is vice president sales & marketing for Seymour Manufacturing of Seymour, Ind. The long-handled tool manufacturer just added a line of forged solid shanked tools and made packaging enhancements. He said he was looking forward to previewing these products with attending distributors, “We continue to add some specialized, niched products for the industrial contractor and nursery retailer.”

Distribution America and PRO Group host the conference jointly in an effort to increase efficiencies and reduce costs for attending manufacturers, who have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with distributor management teams.

Steve Synnott, president and chief operating officer for PRO Group, Inc. said the conference provides an ideal forum for addressing strategic planning, major marketing initiatives, financial performance and new product launches. “PRO Group’s goal at each EPC is to forge long-term partnerships that position the distributors’ retailer customers to more effectively compete with big box stores,” Synnott said

Distribution America President, Dave Christmas said of the conference, “Once again this is proving to be one of the premier industry events. Our members have been offered more promotional buying opportunities than ever before.” Christmas added that business is picking up for Distribution America’s members. “October was a great month for us,” he said.

Prior to the conference, Doug Miller, president of the Spokane, Wash-based Jensen Distribution Services, said his company puts together business plans to help both Jensen Distribution Services and the vendor increase sales and profitability. “Our merchandise managers have specific goals in mind that differ for each vendor,” Miller said. “Two global issues we are working on with all of our vendors are increased co-op advertising funds and support of our company’s 125th anniversary in 2008.”

Doug Laird, director hardware sales, for the Apex, N.C.-based Cooper Hand Tools, said his goal going into the conference was to review mutual performance in the current year, uncover challenges or opportunities and establish a growth plan for the coming year. “This event allows us to meet key wholesaler and buying group personnel in one location and to plan future business activity,” Laird said.

Stanley Snowden, CEO of the Morristown, Tenn.-based Wallace Hardware Co., Inc., said, “Our goal is to come up with as many ideas as possible to generate profitable business for us and our vendors as well as any last minute promotional opportunities that may be available for our upcoming show at the end of November.”

William Bollin, CEO of The Bostwick-Braun Company, which is based in Toledo, Ohio, said his company’s strategy is to bring several teams to the conference in order to allow ample time to meet with both current vendors and prospective vendors. “We are able to step back from the day-to-day routine and explore broader issues that affect our business with executives from the vendor community.”

Allen Winn, vice president of merchandising of Knoxville, Tenn.-based House-Hasson said the House-Hasson buying team met prior to the conference to establish an agenda for the meetings and develop a business plan for the conference. “We would love to see more vendors participate,” Winn said. “The vendors at the EPC show they care about the success of our business and will remain in the forefront of our business.”

For distributor Lon Stephens, general manager of the Conklin, N.Y.-based Co-operative Feed Dealers, the EPC provides exposure to “products that we might not look at if we didn’t have appointments scheduled. We hope to come away with one or two opportunities to sell products that will exceed sales expectations and contribute significantly to the bottom line.”

Special conference events included the Wallace Prayer Breakfast with guest speaker Jim Lange, who authored Bleedership, Biblical First Aid for Leaders, a book that tells real stories of leadership from a business perspective, and a golf tournament pairing distributors with manufacturers.

Mike Braun and Tom Chasteen of The Hardware Industry Inc, presented information to attending distributors about a new program that provides product samples to retailers to preview, including the Library Card Program, the Market Test Program and the Request Show Specials Program. According to Chasteen, these initiatives are designed to help move product through the two-step hardware channel in an efficient, cost effective and timely manner.

Dennis MacDonald with the National Hardware Show also addressed attendees to promote the

National Hardware Show’s return to Las Vegas.

The conference also features a popular new product display area. Distributor attendees selected the best new products and presented awards to the manufacturers for the Overall Best New Product and the Best New Product by major hardline categories.

The Overall Best New Product was awarded to Shop-Vac Corp. for the 18 Volt Cordless Handheld Vacuum. Category winners included: Coleman Cable’s smart strip 7 Outlet Surge Protector (electrical); the Rechargeable 1 Watt LED Flashlight from Great Neck Saw Mfg. (tools); Custom LeatherCraft’s Mossy Oak 16-inch BigMouth Bag (hardware); Ames True Temper’s Sync-it Outdoor Water Station (lawn and garden); Rust-Oleum Corporation’s Porch and Floor Coating Dove Gray (paint); Plumb Pak Corporation’s Chrome and Porcelain Faucet Styled Tank Leather (plumbing), and the JacPac Regulator Kit from Supplierpipeline Inc. (power tools).

Synnott said the new product display gives suppliers an opportunity to test new products and packaging on a distributor audience. “While it is not a primary focus of the event, the Best New Product awards are coveted by DA and PRO Group suppliers,” Synnott said.

Kenny Beauvais, president and CEO of the Shreveport, La.-based HDW, Inc., said he was particularly impressed with the improved new product area. “This format allows us as distributors an opportunity to see many new items for the first time prior to their introduction for the new year,” Beauvais said. “This year more than 95 items were evaluated by distributors, which provided a great showcase for those participating manufacturers. This is a very cost effective way for manufacturers to show and tell us about their new offerings. This conference is the best value for our time to get business done.”

During separate membership meetings, both Distribution America and PRO Group, Inc. presented honors to distributors and manufacturers for achievements.
